Position Summary 

In order to support the mission and goals of the Malaria Atlas Project (MAP) East Africa (EA) Node, Ifakara Health Institute (IHI) is looking for a Postdoc Researcher with advanced modeling skills. This person will help develop and implement state-of-the-art advanced geospatial analytical architectures to understand the risks and estimate the burden of Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax malaria, as well as evaluate the impact of interventions across various levels and settings at global, regional, and national levels. The National Malaria Control Programmes (NMCPs) will use the high-quality evidence to guide the best possible allocation of resources in malaria endemic countries.

In addition to developing approaches that can be used in a complicated analytical pipeline or by other team members, the post-docs are expected to adhere to coding and data-management standards. In addition to contributing to team communication tactics, postdocs should take the lead in preparing scientific reports and journal articles for publishing of research findings from their work in open access journals as a scientific accomplishment.

Along with working with a variety of malaria stakeholders, this position will also entail explaining the value of the malaria decision to NMCPs, translating model results, and developing and enhancing analytical abilities in others through supervision, mentorship, and training.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • To offer statistical expertise in the creation and application of spatiotemporal models to address a range of malaria research concerns pertaining to risk assessment, morbidity and mortality estimation, transmission profile comprehension, and intervention impact optimization.
  • To mentor others and aid in the most effective display of analysis, result interpretation, and pertinent conclusions.
  • Oversee your own scholarly research and administrative tasks, including small-scale project management to organize various work components and adhere to deadlines.
  • In order to promote use and adoption, spearhead cooperation and interactions with NMCPs to translate and convey MAP’s modeling efforts, outputs, and products.
  • Assist the data scientist and data engineering team in managing NMCP’s data and output requests, establishing compute infrastructure, and developing data pipelines.

Qualification and Experience

  • PhD in mathematics, biostatistics, or a quantitative field with epidemiological expertise.
  • Proficiency in Bayesian modeling with Gaussian processes and a clear grasp of the challenges associated with globalizing these models, as well as with validation, performance evaluation, and sensitivity analysis.
  • Knowledge of covariate selection and multimetric analysis in the context of modeling complicated, large-scale data with geographical correlations.
  • Familiarity with cutting-edge statistical software libraries like INLA, TMB, or comparable programs.
  • Proven dedication to writing code according to best practices, such as coding standards, source control, and code documentation/repositories.
  • Experience managing relationships with senior stakeholders, data owners, and partners when working with national disease programs.

 Skills and Competencies

  • Outstanding oral and written communication abilities in a polite and professional manner.
  • Knowledge of other statistical software, data visualization programs, and one or more programming languages (e.g., R/Python, Stata).
