The Institute of Social Work is a Tanzanian higher education institution that was founded under the Institute of Social Work Act [Cap 110 R.E 2002], which was then amended by the written Laws (Miscellaneous amendments) (No. 3) Act of 2002. Here, the Act is simply referred to as the Act.
To meet the demand for qualified labor inspectors, administrators, and industrial relations officers nationwide, the Institute introduced a certificate program in labor studies in 1982 and an advanced diploma in labor studies in 1990. Further progress was shown in 2002 when the Institute launched Certificate and Advanced Diploma programs in Human Resource Management and a Postgraduate Diploma in Social Work.
Additionally, in 2004, a Postgraduate Diploma in Law, Mediation, and Arbitration was launched. The Institute also provided Ordinary Diplomas (National Technical Award Level 6) and Bachelor Degrees (National Technical Award Level 8) in all of its subject areas in 2006–07. The Institute introduced Postgraduate Diplomas in Health System Management and Strategic Human Resource Management in 2013–14.
Institute of Social Work Admission

Entry Requirements
1. Basic Technician Certificate Programmes – (NTA Level 4)
- The candidate must have passed the Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (CSEE) four times or more, excluding religious subjects, in order to be eligible for admission. or For a minimum of six (6) months, the candidate must possess a certificate from an institution that has been accredited by NACTE or NVA Level 3.
2. Ordinary Diploma Programmes – (NTA Level 5&6)
Minimum Entry Qualifications:
- Direct Entry: To be eligible, a candidate must have finished the Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (ACSEE) with at least one (1) principal pass and a subsidiary in two pertinent subjects totaling at least 1.5 points (i.e., at least one E and S). Four (4) Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (CSEE) credits are also required of the candidate.
- Equivalent Entry: A Basic Technician Certificate from a NACTE-approved institution with a 2.0 GPA. Additionally, the applicant needs to obtain three consecutive passes on the Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (CSEE). or a Certificate in Nursing/Midwifery and related studies, or a Certificate of Education (Grade III A) with a C average from NACTE-accredited schools. Additionally, at least four passes on the Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (CSEE) are required of the candidate.
3. Bachelor Degree Programmes – (NTA Level 7- 8)
- Completed coursework for the A-level before 2014: Two primary passes totaling 4.0 points from two themes (where A=5; B=4; C=3; D=2; E=1) are required for admission to the relevant program.
- Finished coursework for the 2014 and 2015 A-levels: Two primary passes (two Cs) totaling 4.0 points from two themes (where A=5; B+=4; B=3; C=2; D=1) decide admission to the relevant program. A “D” is not considered a principal pass in this category.
- A-level assignments finished in 2016: Admission to the respective program is indicated by two principal passes with a total score of 4.0 points from two themes.
- B+ Grade: Recognition of Prior Learning: A = 75-100; B+ = 65-74; B = 50-64; C = 40-49; D = 35-39; F = 0-38.
- At least four (4) O-level passes (Ds and above), an NVA level III with fewer than four O-level passes, or equivalent international credentials as assessed by VETA or NECTA are required of candidates with equal qualifications.
4. Postgraduate Diploma Programmes
- A Bachelor’s degree or Advanced Diploma in a comparable field, or its equivalent in social science, with a passing grade is one of the prerequisites for admission that the applicant must fulfill.
5. Master Degree Programme (NTA Level 9)
- One-year program: Advanced Diploma/Bachelor’s degree in Social Work with a GPA of 2.7 or Postgraduate Diploma in Social Work. Applicants in this category will only need to finish the Advanced Modules, which are worth 120 credits.
- Two-year program: A bachelor’s or advanced diploma in the social sciences with a GPA of 2.7, preferably in community development, education, psychology, sociology, health sciences, or any other related discipline. Furthermore, candidates in this category—those who have never worked in social work—must finish the 260-credit Foundation and Advanced Modules.
